Say Goodbye to Congested Pores: How DiamondGlow Targets Active Acne and Blackheads

THIS ARTICLE MENTIONS

If you've tried clearing blackheads and active breakouts with topical skincare alone, you've likely noticed the results plateau quickly. A DiamondGlow facial for acne works differently.

It addresses congested pores through three simultaneous steps. A diamond-tipped wand mechanically removes the dead skin cells that block follicles. Closed-loop vacuum suction extracts blackhead debris from open pores. Then SkinMedica's Pore Purifying Pro-Infusion Serum delivers salicylic acid into the freshly cleared skin.

Unlike topical skincare applied to an intact surface, this sequence deposits active ingredients through a barrier that exfoliation and extraction have just opened.

DiamondGlow is offered at all four Esthetics Center locations across Northern California (Sacramento, El Dorado Hills, Rocklin, and Fair Oaks) under the oversight of Dr. Reginald Rice, MD, FACS, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon.

What Makes DiamondGlow Different from a Standard Facial for Acne

A standard facial relies on steam, manual extraction, and topical products applied to an unaltered skin surface. A DiamondGlow facial for acne integrates exfoliation, extraction, and infusion into a single, continuous device pass. Each step prepares the skin for the next, which produces a different outcome than performing them separately or at different appointments.

Step 1: Diamond-Tip Exfoliation Removes the Dead Cell Layer That Traps Oil

A diamond-encrusted wand passes over the skin and mechanically lifts away the accumulated layer of dead keratinocytes on the surface. When this layer builds up, it seals sebum inside the follicle. That trapped sebum oxidizes on contact with air to form a blackhead, or remains enclosed and becomes the substrate for the bacterial activity that drives inflammatory breakouts.

Removing this layer is the prerequisite for everything that follows. No serum penetrates effectively through dead cell accumulation, and no extraction reaches follicle contents without first clearing the surface.

Step 2: Closed-Loop Vacuum Extraction Clears Active Blackheads

Simultaneously with exfoliation, a vacuum channel inside the wand draws out follicular contents (sebum plugs, cellular debris, and oxidized material) using controlled suction. Because the system is closed, extracted debris moves into a collection chamber rather than being redistributed against the skin, which is the risk with manual extraction.

This step is the primary mechanism for blackhead removal. Open comedones sit near the surface of the follicle and respond directly to suction. The debris collected in the chamber after treatment gives the provider a visible read on which zones held the most congestion.

Step 3: Pore Clarifying Serum Infusion Targets Breakout-Prone Skin

Immediately after the extraction pass, the device infuses SkinMedica's Pore Purifying Pro-Infusion Serum into the treated skin. The serum contains salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid that is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate the follicle rather than remaining at the water-layer surface.

Research published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology confirms salicylic acid mixes with sebaceous gland lipids inside hair follicles, reaching structures other acids cannot (Arif, 2015): "SA is a lipid-soluble agent, in contrast with the α-hydroxy acids (such as glycolic acid), and is therefore miscible with epidermal lipids and sebaceous gland lipids in hair follicles."

It also contains oregano oil, which has documented antimicrobial properties against Cutibacterium acnes, the bacteria responsible for inflammatory breakouts.

A 2018 study in Molecules found that oregano essential oil demonstrated the strongest antimicrobial activity against C. acnes among seven essential oils tested, with the lowest inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of the group (Taleb et al., 2018).

Because the skin has just been exfoliated and the follicles opened by extraction, the serum reaches structures that topically applied salicylic acid would not reach on unexfoliated skin.

Which Acne Types Does DiamondGlow Treat?

DiamondGlow is a resurfacing treatment, not a medical acne therapy. Whether it is the right fit depends on which type of breakout you are dealing with.

Blackheads and Whiteheads (Comedonal Acne)

Blackheads and whiteheads are often the most visible and frustrating form of congestion. They form when dead skin cells and sebum block the follicle opening. Blackheads are open to the surface; whiteheads are closed. Both represent the stage of acne formation before bacteria are significantly involved.

DiamondGlow is most effective for comedonal acne. The exfoliation step removes the dead cell accumulation that blocks the follicle, and the extraction step directly removes the plug. Patients with congestion-heavy skin (enlarged pores, chronic blackheads across the nose and chin) typically see the most immediate visible change after a session.

Papules and Mild Inflammatory Breakouts

When Cutibacterium acnes colonizes a blocked follicle, the immune response produces the redness and swelling of an inflammatory breakout. DiamondGlow addresses this type through two mechanisms: physical removal of the congestion that creates the bacterial environment, and infusion of salicylic acid and oregano oil, which act on both the sebum substrate and the bacterial activity driving the inflammation.

DiamondGlow is appropriate for mild to moderate inflammatory acne. Your provider at Esthetics Center will assess your skin at the consultation and determine whether DiamondGlow is the right entry point or whether it should be paired with another treatment.

What DiamondGlow Does Not Treat on Its Own

Cystic acne forms deep in the dermis and is driven primarily by hormonal fluctuations that trigger excess sebum production from the sebaceous glands. This type does not have a surface-accessible component that exfoliation or extraction can reach. DiamondGlow may support overall skin clarity for patients managing cystic acne, but it is not a primary treatment for hormonal or cystic breakouts.

If your primary concern is nodular or cystic active acne, your provider will discuss whether DiamondGlow fits within a broader plan that also addresses the underlying hormonal or pharmaceutical component.

How Many DiamondGlow Sessions Does It Take to Clear Congested Pores?

For active congestion, the recommended starting cadence is one session every two weeks until the breakout pattern stabilizes. Once the skin has cleared, most patients transition to a maintenance schedule of one session every four to six weeks.

This timing aligns with the skin's natural renewal cycle. Skin cell turnover takes approximately 28 days, so spacing treatments to coincide with that cycle means each session clears the new buildup before it progresses to blockage. Skipping maintenance allows the cycle to restart and congestion to return.

Your provider will assess your skin at each visit and adjust the frequency based on how your acne responds. Some skin types with high sebum production respond faster to bi-weekly sessions; others stabilize more gradually.

DiamondGlow vs. Other Acne Treatments at Esthetics Center

DiamondGlow is a non-ablative surface treatment. It does not use heat, laser energy, or chemical acids, making it appropriate for active breakouts and for patients who cannot tolerate any downtime.

For patients whose acne has left post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the dark spots that remain after a breakout heals), treatments like the Pico laser or IPL photofacial address pigmentation at a depth DiamondGlow does not reach. Many patients at Esthetics Center begin with a DiamondGlow series to clear active congestion, then address residual discoloration with a targeted laser protocol.

Your provider will discuss which sequence makes sense based on your current skin condition, skin tone, and goals.

Who Should Avoid DiamondGlow?

DiamondGlow is not appropriate for all skin conditions. Providers at Esthetics Center will assess your skin before treatment. Patients with active open wounds, sunburned skin, rosacea flares, or those currently taking isotretinoin (Accutane) should discuss timing and suitability at their consultation before proceeding.

FAQs: DiamondGlow for Acne

Does DiamondGlow help active acne or only prevent future breakouts?

Both, and patients often notice the difference the same day. The extraction step addresses existing blackheads and pore congestion during the session itself. The serum infusion targets the bacterial and sebum environment that drives future breakouts. Patients typically notice both an immediate reduction in visible congestion and a gradual improvement in breakout frequency with consistent treatment.

How does DiamondGlow remove blackheads without squeezing?

The device uses closed-loop vacuum suction to draw sebum plugs and debris out of open follicles during the treatment pass. Because the extraction is mechanical rather than manual, it does not apply pressure to surrounding skin, which reduces the risk of post-extraction redness or follicle damage from the extraction process itself.

What serum does DiamondGlow use for acne-prone skin?

For acne and congestion concerns, DiamondGlow uses SkinMedica's Pore Purifying Pro-Infusion Serum. It contains salicylic acid, which penetrates oil-filled follicles, and oregano oil, which has antimicrobial properties relevant to Cutibacterium acnes activity in the follicle.

Is DiamondGlow appropriate for sensitive, acne-prone skin?

Sensitive skin types often approach resurfacing treatments with caution, and that's understandable. DiamondGlow is generally well-tolerated by sensitive and acne-prone skin types. It does not use lasers, heat, or chemical acids applied to the skin surface, which makes it one of the more tolerable resurfacing options for reactive skin. Sessions take approximately 30 minutes and require no downtime. Your provider will confirm suitability at your consultation, as individual skin conditions vary.

Can DiamondGlow cause a purging reaction or initial breakout?

It can happen, and it's worth knowing about before your first session. Some patients notice a short-term increase in breakout activity after the first one or two sessions. This reflects the extraction of congestion that was already present in follicles below the surface, not a negative response to the treatment. This typically resolves within a few days and diminishes with subsequent sessions.

Is DiamondGlow or a chemical peel better for acne?

DiamondGlow and chemical peels target acne through different mechanisms. DiamondGlow extracts congestion physically and infuses serum without altering the skin surface chemically. Chemical peels use acid solutions to dissolve dead cell buildup and resurface the skin, and typically require downtime.

Chemical peels are not appropriate during active inflammatory breakouts. DiamondGlow requires no downtime and can be performed during active congestion. Your provider at Esthetics Center will recommend which option aligns with your skin's current condition and skin tone.
